Vegetation is reduced but not to the point where the world looks barren.įrame rate targets 30 fps and while there are noticeable drops into an estimated 20 fps range, the portable version appears to hit or come close to the target much of the time. Likewise, there’s more pop-in on the Switch but draw distance is longer than you might expect so pop-in is less intrusive. NPCs fade in at distance on the Switch but they’re far enough away that it doesn’t intrude on gameplay unless you’re looking for it. For example, the NPC count in busy areas like the city of Novigrad is roughly the same as it is on PC and console. The graphics are reduced but the sense of playing in a fully realized world is not, or at least not by very much.ĬDPR created a rich world on the Switch by focusing on elements that impart substance rather than flash. Tom Morgan came away from his time playing the game and talking with a senior producer at CDPR impressed with the developer’s commitment to providing Switch players with the deep and immersive open-world experience Witcher 3 has offered on other platforms.

The Switch’s small screen is a benefit when playing undocked, but there’s a more important factor in play. What is surprising is how good Witcher 3 still looks in both docked and portable modes. The reduction in visual quality isn’t a surprise given the Switch’s hardware limitations. Why Witcher 3 on the Switch can be wonderful
